The WORST thing that could happen to a single parent happened to me the other day. I woke up feeling AWFUL the day before a HUGE event in a kids life - 1st Cub Scout Campout of the year! I was mortified I was going to let my son down by being sick and us not being able to go. We were planning on going on Friday night after I got off the air, but I didn't even feel well enough to go to work, much less able to drive a vehicle the way I felt. So between in and out of consiousness, I told Hunter that we would be able to meet up with the scouts around lunch time on Saturday **crossing my fingers and praying that I would feel better in the morning**.
Well, I woke up Saturday not feeling like Death's older brother and felt a little better. We loaded the car with our gear (and loads of Vitamin C and tissues and saltines) and headed up to meet the rest of his buddies and families. We got there just in time for Hunter to shoot bb guns, do archery and play flag football. I laid in the tent on the air mattress which I swear was leaking air by the minute. Few things I could have done without on the trip:
1 - An encounter with a scout wielding his pocket knife like a real weapon - in the state I was in I didn't feel like playing along, so I told on him. Yeah, he was like 8 or 9, but if you don't teach them playing with knives is BAD, someone was going to lose an eye over the weekend or sometime soon in a neighborhood near you.
2 - Fort Wars between the Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelo's. For some reason, I thought the scouts was a brotherhood of sorts. Well not when territories are being threatened by other dens. So there was stealing of walking sticks, sticks being used as swords and weapons etc etc etc. Yes, boys will be boys, but jeez louise, they were like wild banshees.
3 - The showers. I guess boys just don't need a nice place to get clean. I didn't want to shower, but due to the fever and 90 degree heat, I was sweating like a pig and really needed to cool off. I shared my shower with a tree frog. Yes, a frog was clinging to the wall right above the shower head. It was the fastest shower in THE WORLD. Seriously, I would have won the Gold if it were an Olympic event.
I am now home and happy to say took a loooong shower. I have never felt so clean. Hunter is out skateboarding with his pals that live here. I don't know how he has any energy left at all!
Overall, I'm going to have to say this weekend was fun though. Even though I was not feeling that great, any weekend spent with my son is the very best!
